Preparation for Overseas and Graduate Study (POGS)

This course is suitable for those who are preparing to study overseas. In this course, students will learn about the skills required for studying abroad, such as presentation skills. They will also practice group discussions, debatable topic discussions, and making presentations. This course covers all four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). Students will also have a chance to work on their critical thinking and reading skills, which are essential skills required for studying overseas. Furthermore, this course will focus on learning and understanding different cultures to minimize cultural shock, and allow for a smooth transition to life abroad.

Duration of study: 17 days / Monday – Friday / 50 hours (45 hours of study / 5 hours of assessment)

Course content:

  • 1. How to effectively search and assess information for research purposes.
    2. Practice academic writing skills (writing grammatically correct sentences, formal and informal writing structures, how to plan and structure your academic paper, etc.)
    3. Learn to express your opinions with supporting reasons coherently. Such as writing a critical review or making an argument on certain topics.
    4. Learn how to write references and citations (Harvard system)
    5. Learn and practice how to evaluate media articles.
    6. Learn how to read and evaluate academic articles.
    7. Practice critical thinking and critical reading skills.
    8. Learn and practice how to give comments, and how to prepare and give a presentation.
    9. Learn about cultural diversity and how to use appropriate languages in different situations.
